World Events in 1966

Jan 12th         President Johnson announced that America would stay in Vietnam until communist aggression ended.
March 1st      Soviet space probe Venera3 crashed on Venus making it the first space craft to land on another planet’s surface.
March 4       John Lennon declares the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ.

Nov 8th   Edward Brooke became the first black man to be elected to the US Senate

Music in 1966

We were in the thick of the British Invasion. Anything that came out of the UK was a success. However, The Beach Boys released Pet Sounds, which was the best selling album in the UK! Bob Dylan released Blonde on Blonde which was the first ever double album. Oh, that most famous British group released Revolver.

Jan 3rd           The Beatles issued promotional films of their newest singles, Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, giving birth to music videos.
                      Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin perform at the Fillmore West giving birth to the underground music scene.
Aug 29th       The Beatles perform their last concert appearance at Candlestick Park.
September 12th        The Monkey’s TV show premiered.
Oct 8th                      WOR-FM in New York City became the first FM rock music station, under the leadership of DJ Murray the K.

A Taste of Honey by The Tijuana Brass won the Grammy for record of the year
Tom Jones won the Grammy for best new artist.
Barbara Streisand won best pop female vocalist
The Beatles won a Grammy for song of the year for Michelle
